Take a stone sculpture class in a working sculptors studio. Learn about the many stones available in our local deserts. We will be carving alabaster from Anza Borrego Quarry in California, and soapstone from Canada. The students will learn about the many different kinds of colorful and exotic stone used in sculpture. We will be learning how to use pneumatic air chisels, and other hand tools to rough out the initial design. Students will also work with handmade Italian Files and sand paper to refine their images. The end result will be an original piece of art created from stone. The class will take place at Stoneworks Studio at 300 Ventura Avenue, Ventura. $15. MATERIAL FEE DUE TO INSTRUCTOR AT FIRST CLASS.

Critiques after each photo shoot will help students create a portfolio of their best photographs. Student must bring his or her own digital camera. Deconstruction involves the careful taking-apart of various machines and appliances, exploring the construction and insides of things we use and see all the time. Once the deconstruction is complete, we then create sculptural moving art using the pieces and parts we have accumulated. Examples of objects that might be deconstructed: VCR, CD players, radio, blender, computer, and electronic piano. This advance class focuses on creating moving sculptures. |
