Stone Carving
FALL 2010

Take a stone sculpture class in a working sculptors studio. Learn about the many stones available in our local deserts. We will be carving alabaster from Anza Borrego Quarry in California, and soapstone from Canada. The students will learn about the many different kinds of colorful and exotic stone used in sculpture. We will be learning how to use pneumatic air chisels, and other hand tools to rough out the initial design. Students will also work with handmade Italian Files and sand paper to refine their images. The end result will be an original piece of art created from stone. The class will take place at Stoneworks Studio at 300 Ventura Avenue, Ventura. $15. MATERIAL FEE DUE TO INSTRUCTOR AT FIRST CLASS.

If you have ever wanted to create your own animated movie, then this is the place to be! Learn to make a movie using claymation techniques and a digital camera. The class will learn modeling, story boarding, staging, and lighting that will all be put together to create a movie.

Paint in the tradition of the Masters using a time honored approach to painting form - breaking down what you see into a simplified five value system. Learn to paint with confidence and understanding of how light works. Think value first, comparative degree of light and dark falling on an object, color second.

Students discover the process of painting and composition while producing quality work. The class uses acrylic paint to create large, bold, and expressive paintings. This course focuses on developing technical skill, while exploring shape, form, and value. Students learn how to mix paint and develop an awareness of color relationships. Course covers brushstroke, paint application, and surface texture. Students will work at his/her own level and will be introduced to new concepts as they progress

AGES 13 & Up. Capture the beauty of Ventura through the lens of your camera. This class will focus on technical aspects of photography such as composition and how to make natural light work for you. Students will engage in outdoor photo shoots for two sessions meeting at a local Ventura beach. The class has been scheduled at the end of the day to help ensure great lighting to work with. Critiques after each photo shoot will help students create a portfolio of their best photographs. Student must bring his or her own digital camera. A schedule of meeting places will be sent after registration. NO CLASS 10/25 & 10/27

Deconstruction Art, Moving Sculptures

Deconstruction involves the careful taking-apart of various machines and appliances, exploring the construction and insides of things we use and see all the time. Once the deconstruction is complete, we then create sculptural moving art using the pieces and parts we have accumulated. Examples of objects that might be deconstructed: VCR, CD players, radio, blender, computer, and electronic piano. This advance class focuses on creating moving sculptures.
